Is Illinois a swing state in 2026?
No, Illinois is not a swing state. Illinois has not been a battleground in presidential, U.S. Senate, or gubernatorial elections in recent cycles; it has voted for the Democratic presidential candidate in every election since 1992, and both of its big 2026 statewide races, for governor and U.S. Senate, are rated Solid Democratic by the Cook Political Report.
Because Illinois is close to other swing states, Chicago and Illinois volunteers are in a unique position of strength. Operation Swing State organizes free carpools, bus trips, and phone banks connecting Chicagoland organizers directly to high-stakes races in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Iowa where dozens of votes decide the balance of power. Next door, Michigan's U.S. Senate race and Wisconsin's race for governor are rated toss-ups.

Is Chicago a swing state?
No. Chicago is a city, not a state, so it can't be a swing state. It's also one of the most reliably Democratic big cities in the country, and its large Democratic vote is a big reason Illinois isn't competitive statewide.
What Chicago does have is location. Swing districts in southeast Wisconsin are a 60 to 90 minute drive up I-94, and southwest Michigan is about two hours away. That's why Chicagoans who want to help decide a close election volunteer across the state line, by carpooling to a canvass, joining a phone bank, or writing postcards to swing-state voters.
With great proximity comes great responsibility
Chicago sits within three hours of America's closest battleground states. Here is how Illinois volunteers move the needle.
Battlegrounds within reach of Chicago
Choose a destination and join an upcoming carpool departing from neighborhood pickup hubs across Chicagoland.
Kenosha, Racine & Milwaukee
Wisconsin's last three presidential races were each decided by less than one percentage point. Illinois carpools run every Saturday and Sunday up I-94.
SW Michigan & Grand Rapids
Crucial U.S. Senate battleground and swing congressional seats that will decide the House majority.
Eastern Iowa & Quad Cities
Competitive congressional and statewide races where grassroots voter turnout flips critical seats.
How Chicagoland carpools work
Don't have a car? Don't worry. We pair volunteer drivers with non-drivers every single weekend.
Choose a weekend shift
Pick a canvass heading to Wisconsin or Michigan. Indicate if you need a ride or have seats to share.
Depart from Chicago hubs
Carpool staging hubs meet in Rogers Park, Lincoln Park, Logan Square, Oak Park, Evanston, and Highland Park.
Canvass with local partners
Arrive at the field office, receive hands-on training and scripts, pair up with a buddy, and knock doors.

Illinois & Swing State FAQs
Everything you need to know about Illinois election dynamics and swing state volunteering.
Is Illinois a swing state in 2026?
No, Illinois is not a swing state. Illinois has not been a battleground in presidential, Senate, or gubernatorial elections in recent cycles, and it has voted for the Democratic presidential candidate in every election since 1992. That is why Illinois volunteers focus on the competitive races in neighboring Wisconsin and Michigan.
Why isn't Illinois considered a battleground state?
Illinois has a strong Democratic majority anchored in Cook County and the surrounding collar counties (Lake, DuPage, Will, and Kane). Because statewide Democratic candidates routinely win by 10 to 17 percentage points, Illinois does not experience the 50/50 razor-thin margins typical of genuine battleground states.
How can Illinois voters make the biggest impact in 2026 elections?
Because Illinois is not a presidential or Senate battleground, Illinois volunteers have the greatest impact by channeling their efforts into nearby swing states like Wisconsin and Michigan. Operation Swing State organizes free carpools, bus trips, and phone banks departing from Chicago and suburban hubs to knock doors in competitive battleground districts that determine control of Congress.
Are there any competitive swing districts within Illinois?
While Illinois is non-competitive statewide, several suburban congressional seats and downstate legislative districts can be competitive. However, the closest tipping-point races determining the U.S. House and Senate majorities are located just 60 to 90 minutes across the state line in Wisconsin (Kenosha, Racine, Janesville) and southwestern Michigan.
How do Chicago volunteers get involved with Operation Swing State?
You can sign up for weekend carpools to Wisconsin and Michigan directly through Operation Swing State. We match drivers and riders across Chicago neighborhoods (including Rogers Park, Logan Square, Lincoln Park, Oak Park, and Evanston), provide comprehensive on-site canvass training, and supply all scripts and materials.
Turn blue-state energy into battleground wins
Join hundreds of Chicagoland volunteers defending democracy in Wisconsin and Michigan every weekend.
